PREVENTIVE

Cleaning

During a regular dental cleaning (sometimes called scaling), dentist removes plaque and tartar from your teeth above and below the gumline. Deep cleaning involves the same removal of tartar and plaque at and below the gumline as well as careful cleaning of the roots’ surfaces. If your dentist thinks good oral care at home isn’t enough to manage your mild case of gum disease (called gingivitis), he might recommend a deep cleaning. It is almost always the first line of treatment for the more advanced form of gum disease, called periodontitis. Deep cleanings help patients avoid more drastic treatments for gum disease, which if left untreated could possibly lead to tooth loss.

Polish

Tooth polishing is done to smooth the surfaces of teeth and restorations. The purpose of polishing is to remove extrinsic stains, remove dental plaque accumulation, increase aesthetics and to reduce corrosion of metallic restorations. Tooth polishing has little therapeutic value and is usually done as a cosmetic procedure after debridement and before fluoride application. Common practice is to use a prophy cup—a small motorized rubber cup—along with an abrasive polishing compound.

Fluoride

Research shows that fluoride varnish is highly effective at reducing tooth decay if it is applied twice a year. Fluoride varnish should be applied at least twice yearly in all children. Fluoride varnish provides extra protection against tooth decay when used in addition to brushing.

Fluoride varnish is a pale yellow gel that sets quickly when applied to children’s teeth using a soft brush. The varnish sets quickly, has a pleasant taste and a fruity smell. Scientific studies have shown that fluoride varnish gives added protection to teeth against decay when used in addition to brushing teeth regularly with fluoride toothpaste.

Night Guard / Sports Guard

Night guard is to cover the teeth with a night guard to protect them from the strong vertical forces caused by grinding, which causes teeth to crack, break, and, over decades, slowly wear the teeth away to stubs.

Night guards should be taken out every morning and rinsed with cold water to for cleaning purposes. Make it a habit to clean your guard weekly with toothpaste and mouthwash, as this will kill off any saliva-borne bacteria. Always dry your guard prior to putting it back in its storage container.
